This Week in Legacy — The MTGO Spice Reigns!

WRITTEN BY

Howdy folks! It's Joe again and this week we're looking at some of the spicy fun stuff that's popped up in the wake of the brand new Legacy, along with the first major Legacy challenge results after the banning.

MTGO Challenge 7/8/18

The very first MTGO Legacy Challenge after the banning presented a very interesting snapshot of the format. People are trying all sorts of things right now, so it's hard to be super accurate with how the meta is actually shaking out. However, it's obvious to note that one of the basic predictions of the new format in Reanimator being actually worse so far is pretty spot on. People are in for the real hate in the sideboards, and it shows.

Let's look at the breakdown:

As we can see, as expected, the Goose is indeed loose. RUG Delver showed up in high numbers in this event, but the closest any of the pilots got to the Top 8 was a showing in 12th from a fairly stock RUG list with Tarmogoyf's.

At the end of the day it was Sneak and Show that took down the event in a Top 8 filled with decks like DnT, 4C Loam, and Imperial Painter?!

Imperial Painter — UTLEY26 | 6th Place MTGO Legacy Challenge 7/8

2 Red Elemental Blast

Artifacts/Enchantments (16)
1 Great Furnace
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Ensnaring Bridge

4 Smuggler's Copter
1 Blood Moon

1 Goblin Welder
1 Blood Moon
1 Ensnaring Bridge
2 Karn, Scion of Urza
4 Pyroclasm
4 Surgical Extraction
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Viashino Heretic

Painter is a deck that was hit very hard by the banning of Sensei's Divining Top as it lost a lot of the ways it can filter through the deck, so it's awesome to see someone take it to such a stellar finish in this event.

Another deck that showed up in the Top 16 was a super sweet deck with some new tech in the form of Stitcher's Supplier, ZOMBARDMENT!

Zombardment — SCAVENGINGBOOZE | 10th Place MTGO Legacy Challenge 7/8

3 Surgical Extraction
3 Tidehollow Sculler
3 Wear // Tear
2 Zealous Persecution

Zombardment is a deck that focuses heavily on the use of Goblin Bombardment and recurrable threats like Gravecrawler and Bloodghast to kill its opponent through direct damage. Throw in stuff like Cabal Therapy and you've got a sweet deck.

Also showing up in this event, the most adorable little red idiots you could ever want to see. That's right it's GOBLINS!

Goblins — TYHENDO | 24th Place MTGO Legacy Challenge 7/8

Creatures (30)
2 Gempalm Incinerator
4 Goblin Chieftain
4 Goblin Lackey
4 Goblin Matron
4 Goblin Ringleader

1 Siege-Gang Commander
1 Stingscourger

4 Cavern of Souls
4 Mountain
2 Plateau

Sideboard (15)
1 Batterskull
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Faerie Macabre
1 Goblin Sharpshooter
4 Stoneforge Mystic
1 Umezawa's Jitte

Adopting new technology such as Goblin Chainwhirler and Goblin Trashmaster, Goblins has definitely found a niche after the demise of Deathrite Shaman. Goblins pilots will never give up, so it's awesome to see them making a splash.

At the lower end of the event, we've got Esper Stoneblade!

2 Counterspell
4 Force of Will
2 Spell Pierce
4 Swords to Plowshares

Artifacts (2)
1 Batterskull
1 Umezawa's Jitte

Lands (22)
1 Academy Ruins
4 Flooded Strand
2 Island
2 Marsh Flats
1 Plains
2 Polluted Delta
2 Scalding Tarn
3 Tundra
3 Underground Sea
2 Wasteland

Sideboard (15)
1 Council's Judgment
1 Thoughtseize
2 Containment Priest
1 Diabolic Edict
1 Disenchant
2 Ethersworn Canonist
1 Flusterstorm
1 Rest in Peace
1 Supreme Verdict
2 Surgical Extraction
2 Zealous Persecution

This list is very stock for Esper Stoneblade, owing to the fact that the deck is definitely still very powerful and there seems to be less Kolaghan's Command in the format going forward.
