This Week in Legacy — A Brand New Bag

WRITTEN BY

Howdy folks! It's Joe again with some more Legacy content to whet your whistle!

As some of you happy fine folk are now fully aware of, last week Wizards dropped a bomb, finally banning Deathrite Shaman and Gitaxian Probe in Legacy. Those changes went live on MTGO on 7/5/2018, and we've got our first batch of 5-0s to look at.

Let's take a look at this early brave new world without the little Elf that could and a floating eyeball that draws cards, shall we?

Enchantress — 16KM | MTGO Legacy League 5–0

Creatures (8)
1 Dryad Arbor
4 Argothian Enchantress
1 Doomwake Giant
1 Eidolon of Blossoms
1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn

Instants/Sorceries (3)
3 Green Sun's Zenith

Artifacts/Enchantments (30)
1 Helm of Obedience
2 Carpet of Flowers
1 Cast Out
3 Elephant Grass
4 Enchantress's Presence
2 Mirri's Guile
1 Oblivion Ring
1 Rest in Peace
1 Seal of Primordium
1 Sigil of the Empty Throne
2 Solitary Confinement
1 Sphere of Safety
2 Sterling Grove
4 Utopia Sprawl
4 Wild Growth

Lands (20)
1 Bayou
7 Forest
1 Karakas
1 Plains
1 Savannah
3 Serra's Sanctum
4 Windswept Heath
2 Wooded Foothills

Sideboard (15)
1 Doomwake Giant
1 Rest in Peace
1 Aura of Silence
2 Choke
1 Crop Rotation
1 Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
1 Gaddock Teeg
1 Humility
1 Karmic Justice
3 Leyline of the Void
1 Reclamation Sage
1 Worship

A deck that seems incredibly poised to take advantage of less Leovold, Emissary of Trest in the format (thanks to the death of Czech Pile), Enchantress is a hilariously awesome deck that is a lot of fun. Basically, if you like drawing lots of cards, this deck is for you. With the Rest in Peace and Helm of Obedience combo in the main, this seems like a fun deck to play.

Speaking of the death of Czech Pile...

Grixis Control — Knotvalley | MTGO Legacy League 5–0

2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
1 Liliana, the Last Hope

Creatures (10)

Instants/Sorceries (27)
3 Hymn to Tourach
4 Ponder
4 Brainstorm
2 Counterspell
2 Diabolic Edict
3 Fatal Push
4 Force of Will
3 Kolaghan's Command
2 Lightning Bolt

Lands (20)

1 Diabolic Edict
1 Fatal Push
1 Hymn to Tourach
2 Blue Elemental Blast
3 Flusterstorm
2 Pithing Needle
3 Red Elemental Blast
2 Surgical Extraction

That's right, this deck is basically Czech Pile without the Green and a little bit of a further push into the Red side with more Kolaghan's Command and Lightning Bolt. What is essentially now a Grixis Control deck, it will be interesting to see how people will tune this kind of shell going forward.

Meanwhile, on the combo front...

TES — MIS4TUNE | MTGO Legacy League 5–0

Instants/Sorceries (34)
4 Burning Wish
4 Duress
1 Empty the Warrens
4 Infernal Tutor
4 Ponder
4 Rite of Flame
4 Thoughtseize
1 Ad Nauseam
4 Brainstorm
4 Dark Ritual

Artifacts (12)
4 Chrome Mox
4 Lion's Eye Diamond
4 Lotus Petal

Lands (14)
1 Badlands
1 Island
4 Polluted Delta
4 Scalding Tarn
1 Swamp
2 Underground Sea
1 Volcanic Island

Sideboard (15)
3 Empty the Warrens
2 Chain of Vapor
1 Dark Petition
3 Echoing Truth
1 Grapeshot
1 Meltdown
1 Past in Flames
2 Surgical Extraction
1 Tendrils of Agony

But I thought Storm was dead!? Well, no. It never could die off that easily. Storm pilots have always found a way to survive (much like those dinosaurs from Jurassic Park) and TES more than ever stands to profit from Gitaxian Probe being gone by being able to play more proactive discard in the form of Thoughtseize and more fast mana in the form of a full playset of Chrome Mox.

What about the format's former reigning champion, Grixis Delver? Well, uh, life finds a way.

Grixis Delver — EGADD2894 | MTGO Legacy League 5–0

Creatures (14)
4 Bomat Courier
4 Delver of Secrets
4 Gurmag Angler
2 True-Name Nemesis

Instants/Sorceries (28)
1 Forked Bolt
4 Ponder
4 Brainstorm
1 Darkblast
4 Daze
4 Force of Will
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Spell Pierce
4 Thought Scour

Lands (18)
4 Polluted Delta
4 Scalding Tarn
3 Underground Sea
3 Volcanic Island
4 Wasteland

Sideboard (15)
1 Abrade
2 Diabolic Edict
3 Flusterstorm
2 Liliana, the Last Hope
2 Pithing Needle
1 Pyroblast
1 Red Elemental Blast
3 Surgical Extraction

But but but… Bomat Courier?! I'm sure there's a very good reason for this, but man it's certainly strange to see. Is this better than the gold standard of RUG Delver? Unsure, but doubtful given the amount of mana denial that RUG packs. Time will tell which version of the Delvers is the best, but this does look super interesting.

Here's a list from a guy who probably hates fun in all its forms, but that's okay.

Pox — OSMANOZGUNEY | MTGO Legacy League 5–0

Planeswalkers (4)
4 Liliana of the Veil

Creatures (2)
2 Nether Spirit

Instants/Sorceries (21)

1 Mikokoro, Center of the Sea
4 Mishra's Factory
10 Swamp
1 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale

Sideboard (15)
1 Ratchet Bomb
1 Chains of Mephistopheles
4 Dark Confidant
2 Duress
4 Leyline of the Void
2 Pithing Needle
1 Toxic Deluge

I get a shiver every time I read a Pox list because they're just so much fun and hateful at the same time, and cool Legends cards like Chains of Mephistopheles and Nether Void are just so iconic and cool for the archetype. Not to mention the slam dunk of The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale as well.

This next list is actually from a guy I know! He's one of the members of my Nic Fit Discord server!

BUG-White Nic Fit — SOLNOX | MTGO Legacy League 5–0

3 Flusterstorm
1 Golgari Charm
3 Leyline of the Void

1 To the Slaughter

Solnox's list is pretty sweet, even right down to the standard all-star The Scarab God making an appearance! Keep up the good work and grats on the 5–0!

Wrapping Up

That's all the time we have this week folks! While 5–0s are not utterly indicative of the health of the format—especially during this time when people are just jamming anything they can try out—it's nice to see a breath of fresh air with lists that don't include DRS/Probe any longer. It's also nice to see that Wasteland is back in a big way as one of the format's limiters. Deathrite really did bring the format to that point where Wasteland was pretty much useless. Sad, but true.

Anyways, we have a breadth of events coming up to analyze for this new and amazing format. From SCG Worcester to the 25th Pro Tour, it's going to be a wild ride!

Until next time, may all your Magic be Eternal!
