This Week in Legacy — Magic Online Challenges, SCG Cincy, and More!

WRITTEN BY

Howdy folks! It's Joe again, and we're back to looking at big events around the Legacy community!

To kick things off let's start by looking at the metagame for the SCG Cincinnati Team Open! This is a Team Constructed event, so let's keep that in mind when looking at these results.

As a side note, before we get started, it's sad to say that my weekend at SCG Cincy with my own team did not go as well, as we dropped early on in the event due to some bad match-ups and some punting. These things happenobviouslyso we take what we learned and move forward!

SCG Cincinnati Team Open Top 16 Metagame

Again, we can see that Grixis Delver yet again remains the ever popular choice even for a team metagame, putting four lists into the Top 16 and three of those into the Top 8.

Notable teams in the Top 16 were the power team of Harlan Firer/Kevin Jones/Todd Stevens, the Storm Brothers and Scapeshift Queen team of Paul Muller/Caleb Scherer/Rebecca Adlamn, as well as Brennan DeCandio/Ross Merriam/Tannon Grace.

At the end of the weekend, it was the combination of Joe Bernal (Grixis Delver)/Andrew Tenjum (Grixis Energy)/Matt Hoey (U/R Gifts Storm) that took down the overall event with a Grixis Delver mirror match in the finals that came down to an improper Deathrite Shaman activation.

Let's take a brief look at Bernal's list:

Grixis Delver — Joe Bernal | 1st Place SCG Cincy Team Open

Creatures (15)
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Delver of Secrets
2 Gurmag Angler
2 True-Name Nemesis
3 Young Pyromancer

Instants/Sorceries (27)
4 Brainstorm
4 Daze
4 Force of Will
4 Gitaxian Probe
1 Forked Bolt
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Ponder
2 Spell Pierce

Lands (18)
2 Flooded Strand
2 Misty Rainforest
2 Polluted Delta
2 Scalding Tarn
1 Tropical Island
3 Underground Sea
2 Volcanic Island
4 Wasteland

Sideboard (15)
1 Ancient Grudge
3 Cabal Therapy
1 Dismember
1 Flusterstorm
1 Forked Bolt
1 Marsh Casualties
1 Pithing Needle
1 Price of Progress
2 Pyroblast
2 Surgical Extraction

Ever the formula tried and true, Bernal's list doesn't really shy away from the stock maindeck that has been solidified in the archetype for quite some time now. Even Bernal's sideboard is fairly stock and playing it safe, owing to the deck's strong options for sideboard cards.

Another deck that showed up in the Top 8 was Mono-Red Prison (aka Dragon Stompy), in the capable hands of Edward Drew. Let's take a look:

Mono-Red Prison — Edward Drew | 6th Place SCG Cincy Team Open

Creatures (15)
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Magus of the Moon
4 Simian Spirit Guide
2 Hazoret the Fervent
1 Pia and Kiran Nalaar

Planeswalkers (4)
4 Chandra, Torch of Defiance

Instants / Sorceries (4)
4 Fiery Confluence

Artifacts / Enchantments (18)
4 Blood Moon
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Chrome Mox
3 Ensnaring Bridge
3 Trinisphere

Lands (19)
4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
11 Mountain

Sideboard (15)
2 Abrade
2 Faerie Macabre
1 From the Ashes
2 Kozilek's Return
2 Scab-Clan Berserker
2 Sorcerous Spyglass
2 Sphere of Resistance
2 Sulfur Elemental

Boasting a solid maindeck beatdown plan with Goblin Rabblemaster and the ability to grind out longer games under Ensnaring Bridge with Hazoret the Fervent and Chandra is pretty strong. What I really adore about this list is the game this deck has out of the sideboard. Spicy options like From the Ashes and Scab-Clan Berserker are really awesome to see, and Standard all-star Abrade makes an appearance as well!

SCG Cincinnati Legacy Classic Metagame

Following up with the SCG Legacy Classic held the same weekend as the Open, we can again see the immense amount of impact Grixis Delver is having on the format, putting four lists into not just the Top 16 but the Top 8 of the event.

While at the end of the day it was Daniel Duan on Czech Pile to make it to first place, we can't deny the effect that Grixis Delver has had here. Does this further the notion that Deathrite Shaman should eat a ban?

One list that caught my eye came in 11th place as a colorless Eldrazi list; however, it wasn't the normal Eldrazi Stompy lists that we normally see, but Eldrazi Post!

Eldrazi Post —Joseph Cockrell | 11th Place SCG Cincy Legacy Classic

Creatures (13)
1 Emrakul, the Promised End
4 Endbringer
1 Kozilek, the Great Distortion
4 Thought-Knot Seer
2 Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
1 Walking Ballista

Planeswalkers (4)
1 Karn Liberated
3 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

Instants/Sorceries (1)
1 All Is Dust

Artifacts (17)
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Grim Monolith
4 Sorcerous Spyglass
2 Thran Dynamo
3 Trinisphere

Lands (26)
4 Ancient Tomb
3 City of Traitors
4 Cloudpost
4 Eldrazi Temple
3 Eye of Ugin
4 Glimmerpost
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
3 Vesuva

Sideboard (15)
1 All Is Dust
1 Conduit of Ruin
4 Leyline of the Void
1 Pithing Needle
2 Ratchet Bomb
1 Thorn of Amethyst
3 Warping Wail
2 Wurmcoil Engine

Being able to power out a big Eldrazi Titan like Emrakul, Kozilek, or Ulamog early on is pretty strong and back-breaking, but the deck can occasionally suffer from lopsided draws or hands with action and no ramp. Regardless, this is a solid finish for such a cool deck.

Magic Online Legacy Challenge 3/25/2018 — Top 32 Metagame

What a wild event this was. Czech Pile was everywhere in this event, boasting 10 lists in the Top 32, with Grixis Delver coming in at four lists. Czech Pile ended up winning this event, but we're gonna look at some of the spicier lists that showed up.

Let's start by taking a look at the fourth place list, a very wild and interesting Green/Black Nic Fit list!

GB Nic Fit — WindDragon11 | 4th Place MTGO Legacy Challenge 3/25/18

Creatures (16)
1 Deathrite Shaman
1 Dryad Arbor
1 Eternal Witness
1 Meren of Clan Nel Toth
2 Scavenging Ooze
1 Thragtusk
2 Tireless Tracker
1 Titania, Protector of Argoth
4 Veteran Explorer
1 Woodland Bellower
1 Wurmcoil Engine

Planeswalkers (1)
1 Nissa, Vital Force

Instants/Sorceries (17)
3 Abrupt Decay
4 Cabal Therapy
1 Diabolic Edict
1 Diabolic Intent
4 Green Sun's Zenith
3 Hymn to Tourach
1 Maelstrom Pulse

Enchantments (4)
3 Pernicious Deed
1 Sylvan Library

Lands (22)
2 Bayou
1 Bloodstained Mire
4 Forest
1 Ghost Quarter
1 Phyrexian Tower
4 Swamp
4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Windswept Heath
1 Wooded Foothills

Sideboard (15)
1 Golgari Charm
1 Kitchen Finks
4 Leyline of the Void
1 Night of Souls' Betrayal
1 Reclamation Sage
1 Sorcerous Spyglass
3 Thoughtseize
1 Toxic Deluge
1 Vraska, Relic Seeker

This list is crazy in a lot of places, with solid spice like Wurmcoil Engine and Titania, Protector of Argoth. Mad props to WindDragon11 for taking it all the way to fourth place with this!

Another sweet list in the Top 8 that caught my eye was a Goblins deck, but not just any Goblins deck: Moggcatcher Stompy!

Moggcatcher Stompy — PrettyMoe | 6th Place MTGO Legacy Challenge 3/25/18

Creatures (24)
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
1 Goblin Settler
1 Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker
1 Krenko, Mob Boss
4 Magus of the Moon
4 Moggcatcher
1 Murderous Redcap
2 Siege-Gang Commander
4 Simian Spirit Guide
1 Stingscourger
1 Tuktuk Scrapper

Artifacts / Enchantments (16)
4 Blood Moon
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Chrome Mox
4 Trinisphere

Lands (20)
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Cavern of Souls
4 City of Traitors
8 Mountain

Sideboard (15)
1 Boartusk Liege
2 Confusion in the Ranks
1 Goblin Assassin
1 Goblin Sharpshooter
2 Manic Vandal
3 Phyrexian Revoker
3 Pyrokinesis
2 Sudden Shock

A Stompy deck that sticks super low to the ground and also boasts a highly efficient tutor package in the form of Moggcatcher, this deck is sweet to see come back around again. What's even wilder about this deck is the sideboard. Confusion in the Ranks? Boartusk Liege!? Super cool tech if I ever saw it.

The final list we have to look at came in 18th, and is another Stompy list, but this one is Monowhite, a little thing known as Angel Moat Stompy.

Angel Moat Stompy — Kuhmero | 18th Place MTGO Legacy Challenge 3/25/18

Creatures (14)
2 Aven Mindcensor
3 Exalted Angel
2 Gisela, the Broken Blade
3 Restoration Angel
4 Windborn Muse

Instants/Sorceries (4)
2 Armageddon
2 Ravages of War

Artifacts/Enchantments (22)
2 Banishing Light
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Chrome Mox
4 Moat
4 Suppression Field
4 Trinisphere

Lands (20)
4 Ancient Tomb
1 Cavern of Souls
4 City of Traitors
3 Flagstones of Trokair
2 Karakas
6 Plains

Sideboard (15)
1 Bruna, the Fading Light
2 Cataclysm
2 Containment Priest
1 Crucible of Worlds
4 Leyline of Sanctity
2 Oblivion Ring
3 Rest in Peace

This deck notches an entry in the "Only on Magic Online" category because you know for certain that in paper with four Moat this deck is super expensive, but it's certainly a crazy wonderful land of insane Magic cards. The best part of this deck I feel is that it gets to play Bruna and Gisela from out of the board to be able to combine into everyone's favorite legendary Eldrazi horror, Brisela.

In short: I'm in love.

Wrapping Up

That's all the time we've got for this week folks! Let me know on Discord or on Twitter what you want to see show up here in these articles, and I will happily oblige. I am probably going to do another Vintage article at some point as well now that I've managed to get fairly underway with playing some decent leagues with Sun Titan Dredge.

Until next time!
