I'm Chris Powell, one of the developers here at PucaTrade. I'm back and here with more good news!
First off, happy Thanksgiving to everyone! What better way to start off the holidays?
A tradition at the Thanksgiving I attend is to go around the table and share what we are thankful for. I was thankful for my friends and family who made it through the North Bay Fires with their lives and their homes. In the context of PucaTrade I'm thankful for the great trading community we have here and still amazed by the things being sent out.
Wizards of the Coast has launched a number of products in the last month and I'm happy to say they are all tradeable on PucaTrade. Send some out or add them to your want list:
- Duel Decks: Merfolk vs. Goblins
- Iconic Masters
- From the Vault: Transform
- Explorers of Ixalan
- Unstable (releases Dec 8th)
New Language Cards
I oversee the card database and add a lot of the new sets and old missing cards to it. Typically, if we are missing something we will get notified via one of our channels (email, Discord, Uservoice, etc.). I received a message via Discord saying that Captain Sisay (Invasion) wasn't tradeable in Japanese. Hmm, that's strange...
After digging into it I discovered that Gatherer only has French and German in their database (Spoiler: This is where we got a lot of our variant languages), when in fact Invasion was printed in nine languages. Digging further, I found 20–30 old expansions where this was the case. Since I had to fix the issue of incorrect languages, I dug through old set pages on the magic.wizards website to find out the accurate spellings. Then, I added all the proper languages to each expansion that were missing. Lastly, I wrote a script to generate any language cards that were missing based on the new language data. This resulted in over 50,000 new language cards being tradeable!
Note: If the language card is missing an image it will now just display the english card with text overlapped calling out the language. Finding 50,000 images that are rare even for the Internet could take a man a decade to complete.
Let's see what's been flying around PucaTrade this month.

In this section I want to highlight a couple traders (one new trader and one veteran) who are doing awesome things on PucaTrade!
Daniel AKA ALostGunner isn't exactly a new member since he signed up in November of 2016, but he recently started sending out cards (over 70K in PucaPoints in his first week). Welcome him to the site by sending him a trade or two!
Erik AKA EDHDAD is one of the top traders on PucaTrade. He has sent out over 400,000 points worth of cards in the last 30 days and is closing in on nearly two million PucaPoints sent in his Puca Career. Erik is active on Discord and currently experimenting with "pull trades." What's a pull trade? Let's say he has some cards that he'd like to send out, but wants a certain amount of points for them. This may be higher than a promoted want or maybe the card is an alter or signed. Someone else can contact him and say I'll pay that much for that card. Deal sealed! He's always friendly and has great ideas for PucaTrade and the community. Thanks Erik!
You may have experienced a bug where you had a chat window open and a member other than the one you were messaging popped into that same chat. We've resolved this bug so that can no longer happen. It has also been upgraded a bit so that if you get a message while you're on the site you will see a little blue pop-up in the bottom right. This should alert you to new messages more quickly.
This one was a particular Nuisance and allowed for members to accidentally purchase promos of Nuisance Engine instead MTGO Event Tickets, which is what they really want. We figured out how to recreate this by having multiple browser tabs open, one on the Event Ticket page and one perusing the site in "Paper Mode." When you went to promote the Ticket you would see [[Nuiance Engine]] instead. The site should now ignore what mode you are in and default to the promo you are trying to add!
Many have said they don't know about new features or fixes when they go live. The most recent updates to the site can always be seen here. This link is on the version number in the footer of the site (currently v3.5.5). I agree this is a tad hidden on the site and most people don't know about it, so I will do my best to give updates in these posts going forward.
Promoted Want Additions
We've known that members want to be able to promote a playset of a given card and also do it from anywhere around the site. We have new tools to do just that up on flux.pucatrade.com that do just that.
- Promoted any quantity of a card (up to 10). This is especially useful when promoting MTGO Tix.
- Any want dialog now has a button that says Promote
- Editing a non-promoted want from your want list now has a way to promote it (that way you don't have multiple wants for the same card)
There are a couple other feature that Members really want to have which are: Promote multiple editions and offer a percentage instead of a trade value. These are things we have discussed at length and are still trying to find the best way to implement. Both of these features have some hidden complexity that we need to work out.
Christmas is just around the corner (not quite ready for that yet), but help us "send out" some holiday cheer and maybe even send out a gift trade or two to your friends or favorite traders. There were 488 gift trades sent out in November (198 of them Slitherheads)! That's incredible!
This doesn't include the month of giving or the Secret Santa. Thanks to all participating in it! PucaTrade didn't do anything official, but I know some members organized their own through our Discord channel. I'll try to find out some results for that for the next article.
Let's talk soon, and as always Give and let give!
